TorqueMaster to Torsion Spring Conversion: An Honest Guide

Published by Advanced Garages, LLC

If your garage door has a Wayne Dalton TorqueMaster spring system and a spring has broken, there's a good chance we'll talk to you about converting it to a standard torsion spring system. This guide explains what a TorqueMaster is, how it differs from a standard setup, and why we recommend the conversion.

The Three Spring Systems You'll See in Central Florida

Every garage door has a counterbalance system. The springs carry most of the door's weight, so you (or your opener) only lift a small part of it. Most homes have one of these:

  • Standard torsion springs. The most common setup. One or two large springs sit on a steel bar just above the door and twist as the door moves. You can see them, inspect them and measure them.
  • Extension springs. Long springs that run along the horizontal tracks on each side of the door and stretch as the door closes. They're common on older and lighter doors and should always have safety cables running through them.
  • Wayne Dalton TorqueMaster. The springs are sealed inside a metal tube that runs across the top of the door. From the ground you only see the tube, with winding hardware at the ends.

How to Tell If You Have a TorqueMaster

Stand inside the garage with the door closed and look above the door. If you see coiled springs on a bar, you have standard torsion springs. If you see springs along the side tracks, you have extension springs. If you see one smooth metal tube across the top and no springs anywhere, it's most likely a TorqueMaster. Many also have a Wayne Dalton label on the door or the end brackets. Not sure? Take a photo and send it to us or describe it when you call.

Why TorqueMaster Springs Are Harder to Live With

  • You can't see the springs. Because they're inside the tube, rust, wear or a break can't be spotted during a normal inspection. Often the first sign is a door that suddenly feels very heavy or an opener that struggles.
  • The parts are special order. TorqueMaster springs aren't stocked on repair trucks. They have to be ordered for your door, and that can take weeks, while your door sits unusable or propped shut.
  • Less flexibility. With a standard torsion system we can size the springs to your door's actual weight and height, and choose longer-life springs if you want them.

What a Conversion Involves

We remove the TorqueMaster tube and its end hardware, then install a standard torsion system: a solid shaft, a center bracket, springs sized for your door, new cable drums, new cables and bearings. Then we balance the door so it stays put when it's halfway open, and check that the opener isn't straining. Your door panels, tracks and opener stay the same.

Why We Recommend It

  • Same-day repair instead of weeks of waiting. Standard torsion springs are on our truck, so we convert your door the same visit instead of ordering a TorqueMaster part.
  • About the same cost. Replacing a TorqueMaster spring with the special-order part usually costs about the same as converting to standard torsion springs.
  • Easier repairs later. If a spring ever breaks again, most local garage door companies, including us, can fix a standard torsion system the same day. With a TorqueMaster, you'd be waiting on a special order again.
  • Springs you can see. We can inspect them, and you can spot a problem before it leaves you stuck.

Please Don't Try This Yourself

Torsion and TorqueMaster springs hold a lot of stored energy. Winding or unwinding them without the right tools and training can cause serious injury. If a spring has broken, leave the door closed, don't run the opener, and contact us.
